Gutzon Borglum. "General Daniel Butterfield Statue"
Danish American legendary sculptor Gutzon Borglum created this statue of General Daniel Butterfield that stands near a side exit in Sakura Park. The statue is bordered by cherry blossoms that come into bloom just around this time. Borglum created the statue as a private commission that was left in Butterfield's widow's will which caused a lawsuit to be brought upon between the executor of the will and the Gohram Company. Butterfield is remembered as a Civil War hero while sculptor Borglum is remembered for his creation of Mount Rushmore as well as many public sculptures. Some of his sculpture are spread throughout Newark which we will soon be showing on this site.
