The American Merchant Mariners' Memorial is located in Battery Park near the ferries that take on to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The sculpture is based on a photograph taken by the Nazis of a merchant marine vessel that was sinking due to their attacks. The monument honors the thousands of merchant mariners that have died at sea. Marisol Escobar is a famous Venezuelan, yet French-born sculptor whose works are considered part of the pop art movement.
