The American Merchant Mariners' Memorial is located in Battery Park near the ferries that take on to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The sculpture is based on a photograph taken by the Nazis of a merchant marine vessel that was sinking due to their attacks. The monument honors the thousands of merchant mariners that have died at sea. Marisol Escobar is a famous Venezuelan, yet French-born sculptor whose works are considered part of the pop art movement. This wonderful sculpture of what appears to be avian creatures is currently at Riverside Park South and is part of the Model to Monument (M2M), Creating Art for Public Spaces. It was created by Selva Sanjines who has been a student at the Arts League since the 70s.
The enormous sculpture TreeHouse by Benajmin Jones is located in Figment 2011 Sculpture Garden at Governors Island brought by Figment NYC. The Figment 2011 Sculpture Garden runs until Sept. 25 2011. More info: Figment Sculpture Garden 2011.
A landmark of New York City is the Art Deco Atlas sculpture in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral. The sculpture stands at 14 meters or 45 feet in height on top of a double pedestal. The sculpture was created by legendary sculptor Lee Lawrie whose many works are considered national landmarks with the help of another legend such as Rene Paul Chambellan who progressed the Art Deco movement.
Famous American sculptor Katherine Lane Weems created two life size sculptures of rhinoceros, based on rhinoceros that lived in the zoo, that stand at the entrance of Astoria Court in the Bronx Zoo. She is well known for her award winning sculptures of animals. She also created two identical sculptures of these rhinoceros that stand outside of the Biological Science building of Harvard University.
Famous abstract expressionist sculptor Mark di Suvero has an outdoor exhibition in Governors Island that has captivated the attention of many and forced us all to take the ferry across the Hudson River to view this wondrous exhibit. I will be posting more of the sculptures from this exhibition in the following week! The exhibit is titled "Mark di Suvero at Governors Island: Presented by Storm King Art Center" and runs from May 27 - September 25 2011.
Outside of the famous Time-Life Building a very peculiar blue sculpture stands called Cubed Curve. The sculpture was created by William Corvello, installed in 1972 and was originally commissioned by the Association for a Better New York.
From May 27 until September 25, 2011, the New York Electronic Arts Festival will be occurring at Governors Island. The sculpture shown here is Water Wall by John Morton & Jacqueline Shatz located on Liggett Hall Walkway and is part of Wave(form)s - an Exhibition of Electronic Art on Governors Island. John Morton presented an outdoor installation titled Central Park Sound Tunnel, and Jacqueline Shatz has created sculptures out of collages. For more info: New York Electronics Art Festival 2011.
Blane de St. Croix who has his own blogspot blog here on Blogger is currently exhibiting his sculpture titled Mountain Views. He is one of the artists who is contributing to the VISTA exhibition currently at Socrates Sculpture Park.
American sculptor Elizabeth Allison created this sculpture that is currently installed in Riverside Park South. The sculpture is part of the exhibit Model to Monument (M2M), Creating Public Art for Public Spaces. The sculptor is a member of the Art Students League and is well known for making sculptures out of metal and for her unusual head sculptures. One of Manhattan's well known sculptures are Looking Toward the Avenue by legendary pop artist Jim Dine. The three verdigris bronze sculptures measure 14, 18 and 23 feet in height. The sculptures resemble the fame Venus de Milo of course minus her head. The sculptures are located in the former JC Penney Building on 1301 Avenue of the Americas or between the corners of 6th Avenue and West 53rd Street.
Figment 2011 Sculpture Garden at Governors Island made possible by Figment NYC is currently exhibiting some very peculiar sculptures made from recyclable material. One of these sculptures is Knit For Trees from Brooklyn artist Isabelle Garbani. The Figment 2011 Sculpture gardens runs until Sept. 25, 2011.
