Lorenzo Pace. "Triumph Of The Human Spirit"
African-American sculptor Lorenzo Pace created this sculpture on commission from Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 2000 as part of the Percent for Art Program. The sculpture is installed in Foley Square in front of the NYC Courthouses next to Thomas Paine Park and City Hall and has become a meeting point for protests, rallies and an unauthorized skating park. The black granite sculpture stands in the middle of a fountain at a height of 50 feet and is meant to represent the sails of a ship from the slave-trading era. Nearby there is a Colonial era African-American burial ground. More info: Lorenzo Pace's wesbite
