Henry Bacon. "Walloon Settlers Memorial"
Architect Henry Bacon created this memorial to the Walloon Settlers who settled in this area of New York after their petition was granted by the Dutch West Indian Company. The Walloons were native of the County of Hainaut in Belgium who fled to Holland because of religious persecution. Since they were unwelcome in Holland they petitioned the British to settle in their Virginia colony but were rejected. The memorial was donated by Conseil Provinical du Hainaut and originally placed in the northeastern part of the park before being moved due to the construction of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to its current location.
