Austrian-born American sculptor Karl Bitter created the equestrian statue above of Franz Sigel, a recognized military officer, educator, journalist, and public servant. Sigel also has a park named after him in The Bronx. Bitter has other works in Riverside Park but also throughout the US. He is well remembered for his architectural sculpture which includes The Metropolitan Museum of Art, memorials such as the one above, and residential work which includes mausoleums.
